OK, so you bought an X2 modem thinking that Quake will rock with your new low ping, NOT! I averaged 40 to 50 ms higher pings when using X2 vs. 33.6 on dial up! There are some things you can do to help improve your performance, especially under Win 95. I had to know what was going on here so I whipped out the old packet sniffer. What I found was simply amazing! I am by no means an expert, this is just my opinion...... Not to bore everyone but it looks like the IP packet header gets modified to the X2 format and this is causing the quake server to not fully understand the Data. If you want more of a technical explanation, just drop me an e-mail.. Probably the best way to resolve the problem is visit the X2 quake page.
Another way around the X2 problem is to ask your ISP if they have a 28.8 or 33.6 dialup number. If they do, you dial that number when playing quake! |
